Ever played the game where you guess how many sweets are in the jar? Imagine having to do it indefinitely and that basically sums up the lives of some poor folks at the Metropolitan police, whose latest estimate of victims in the phone hacking saga has flicked up to 5,795. That’s 2,000 more than previously thought. “It is not possible to give a precise figure…” began Scotland Yard’s statement. And with 11,000 pages of notes to trawl through, we believe them. Then again, if they’d bothered to start doing it five years ago, when they seized all this evidence, they’d have finished by now. (Source: MediaGuardian)
Sticking with the police, they’ve suddenly decided transparency should come at a price. Scotland Yard’s highfalutin’ Income Development Unit has come up with the idea of charging TV producers an “access fee” of £500 a day, plus “a 15 per cent share of any profits from the sale of the show abroad or merchandising”, according to MediaGuardian. Any resources used, such as “bikes, cars, dogs and horses”, would also warrant a charge. Shocked documentary-makers say the charges would be too high. They never had such problems with Leslie Nielsen. (Source: MediaGuardian)
On a more serious note, you probably won’t notice that Match of the Day will be broadcasting from Salford for the first time this Saturday night. So instead of chauffeuring Alan Hansen down to London from Merseyside at the expense of the license payer, the BBC will be shipping the indispensable Gary Lineker up to Manchester. Football editor Andrew Clement reckons they’ll be a bigger “pool of talent” to choose from in the new location for Match of the Day 2, as if the erudite punditry of Robbie Savage could be surpassed. To many, possibly even the happy couple themselves, it was a fairytale day. But to newspaper editors across Fleet Street, it was probably equal to a shower storm in the middle of a long drought, as the royal wedding gave some UK newspapers a boost in circulation of up to 25 per cent on Saturday, compared to the previous week.
