Daily Digest: Mirror finds morals, phone-hacking, PCC survey

The Daily Mirror is attempting to prove it has a conscience by following in the footsteps of the standard bearer for press morals, the Daily Mail. The Mirror, owned by Richard Desmond who recently turned his back on the Press Complaints Commission, will move its corrections and clarifications column to a more prominent position on page two. Whether there will be enough room for those corrections remains to be seen. (Source: Press Gazette)

Another day, more phone-hacking news. Details have emerged of 28 News International employees named in the notebook of Glenn Mulcaire, suggesting the scale of the illegal practice was higher than has been admitted by the company. Of more interest is the mention in Mulcaire’s notepad of the Daily Mirror. Was Mulcaire finding victims to feed to the gaping maw of another tabloid? Trinity Mirror currently denies dealing with Mulcaire. (Source: MediaGuardian)

Now, normally when the acronym PCC is mentioned on the pages of Media Digest, it’s attached to terms such as useless and futile. But not this time. No, a survey (carried out by the watchdog) found that 74 per cent of complainants have been satisfied with how the PCC dealt with the complaint. The survey did only get 61 responses, however, which suggests the watchdog still has its work cut out to appease its critics. (Source: journalism.co.uk)
