It’s official: Rupert Murdoch is no longer Britain’s biggest press baron.
That title now belongs to the Rothermeres, following Murdoch’s decision to relinquish the News of the World and more than 2.6m sales a week, according to figures by media information company Mediatel.
The Rothermeres’ Associated Newspapers, which publishes the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and the Metro freesheet, has a weekly circulation of 21,423,551.
That eclipses the 20,570,706 Murdoch’s News International commands from the Sun, the Times and Sunday Times.
And with the Mail‘s website looking down from an even loftier perch – thumbing its nose at rivals to the tune of millions in unique users – Associated can now rightfully lay claim to being the country’s most influential press owner.
