Ofcom to get tough on misbehaving radio stations

Radio stations have been flouting Ofcom’s guidelines for too long, and now the regulator is upping its game to bring decency back to the airwaves.

New guidelines will be issued to the BBC and commercial radio stations warning them to be more careful when broadcasting sexually explicit lyrics and live shows in a continued effort to protect children from inappropriate content.

The renewed focus on keeping swear words and misogynistic attitudes away from young ears is part of David Cameron’s commitment to protect young audiences from adult material throughout all UK media. Advertisers have also been warned to cease using sexual imagery near schools, while TV broadcasters have been issued similar guidelines to radio stations.

Ofcom said it “takes its role in protecting children from offensive language on the radio very seriously” and added that guidance will be issued to radio stations across the UK “by the end of the year”.
