The Press Association is planning to cut at least 30 members of staff from its UK news agency operation.

“In common with most media companies, we have been affected by recent structural and cyclical changes within the sector and we are taking steps to ensure our businesses are operating as efficiently as possible while retaining the quality of our services,” said a spokeswoman.

Sources within the company – quoted by MediaGuardian – have claimed that the cuts are “stretching” the service, while areas such as sport and video journalism are suspected of bearing the brunt of the cuts.

PA remains resolute, however, saying that its 1,300 staff and 200 journalists across the UK and Ireland means that the service’s quality has not been affected.

And the company has lifted its pay freeze for employees on less than £30,000.

Last year PA turned an £11 million loss into a £3 million profit, helped in part by the arrival of new chief executive Clive Marshall.
