The BBC Trust has risked irking commercial media outlets by deciding not to run a public value test into the launch of the Corporation’s smartphone app for BBC News, Sport and iPlayer.
The National Press Association complained that the move would impact the print industry’s ability to charge for apps. “The BBC is preparing to muscle into a nascent market and trample over the aspirations of commercial news providers,” said NPA director David Newell.
But after a short review the Trust said that the impact of free BBC branded apps would not be that great because BBC content was already available through mobile users’ web browsers.
