The runaway success of Mail Online has prompted its owner to consider rolling out offices for the website around the world.
Having established an outpost in New York, Mail Online has risen to the position of the second most popular English-language newspaper site in the world, receiving 79 million unique visits in October.
Publisher DMGT believes it will soon top that list, and further international diversification would look at replicating the New York model in India, Australia, the Middle East and Africa.
According to paidContent, DMGT chief executive Martin Morgan told investors that Mail Online “would have broken even this year without the investment in the States.
“This is an early-stage business. We’re still in a moderate investment phase, not really throwing much money at it in the total scheme of DMGT.
“In the last few weeks, we seem to be gaining traction on selling advertising space in the US – but it’s early days.
“Profitability on a meaningful scale is not going to be until 2013 or so, to be realistic.”
