Viewers wanting to catch up on ITV programming online will have to pay for the privilege come January next year, when the broadcaster will implement a micropayment system into its ITV Player.
Despite the impending launch of a pay system, ITV chief executive Adam Crozier claims that the broadcaster will use a number of different payment models in the early stages of the development.
“We are working on the consumer proposition, what people are prepared to pay for and what will work and won’t work,” he said.
If ITV can provide a suitable ‘consumer proposition’, as Crozier puts it, the micropayment system will give ITV’s finances a boost. The broadcaster posted a 33 per cent increase in online revenues year-on-year, and the ITV Player has seen a 19 per cent increase in average monthly users.
