Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has avoided publicly backing BSkyB chairman James Murdoch, suggesting that Murdoch Jr’s popularity is waning within both the company and the Government.
Hunt was asked by Labour MP Chris Bryant if he believed whether Murdoch was “a fit and proper person to be chairing [BSkyB] any longer”, to which he replied: “The most important thing is that the truth comes out.
“Before [the Leveson inquiry is] complete, it would not be appropriate for me to make specific comments about who should do what job.”
Hunt also revealed that the government is set to publish a white paper concerning reformation of press regulation sometime before the end of next year. That white paper will be informed by advice from the Leveson inquiry, but Hunt assured MPs that “we don’t want to go too far in the opposite direction and stop the press being free, vibrant and robust”.
