Pressure is being put on BT to block filesharing website The Pirate Bay, in an attempt by industry bodies to curb the tide of online piracy.
Film studios, record companies and publishers are hoping the UK’s largest internet provider will block access to the website, which is used to download .Torrent files. These contain the information required to download copyrighted material such as films and music.
The coalition of companies may have the upper hand, after a high court set a precedent last week by forcing BT to block a similar website. BT has been asked to block the website voluntarily, but the coalition intends to take the matter to court if the telecomms giant doesn’t agree to the demands.
