BBC journalists given clean bill of health in hacking review

BBC journalists can sleep soundly after the Corporation’s review into whether its journalists have used illegal methods to obtain information turned up empty handed.

Launched in July after the closure of the News of the World, the BBC re-assessed editorial practices and policies in its investigative journalism. While no evidence was found of phone or computer hacking, the Corporation did find that journalists occasionally employed the use of private investigators to locate or identify “subjects of significant public interest”.

While the report suggested there were no shortcomings in the practices of the BBC’s journalists, director general Mark Thompson said he would look to strengthen the BBC’s guidelines for journalists.
